Private Medicals & Reports

The NHS provides most health care free of charge. However there are a number of other services for which fees are chargeable. Services not covered by the NHS include things such as medical reports for insurance companies, medical reports for PCV / LGV drivers, letters for fitness to travel, copies of medical records, holiday cancellations etc.

If  a GP is required to write a letter, sign a certificate or complete any kind of medical report, it is a professional duty that they check the accuracy of the information. This may involve examining the patient’s entire medical record.

Such work is time consuming and is carried out on a first come first serve basis.  Generally the timescale for the completion for this type of work is between 4 and 6 weeks depending on the complexity and the level of detail required.  Timescales are also effected by the number of requests we get. There is a fixed amount of time and resource available so, if we have numerous requests, timescales for completion may be longer.

Fees are based on the amount of time it takes and how complex it is to complete the work. See link below.

If you require a letter or report to be completed you need to provide all the information necessary in writing. This should include the reason for the report, who it is for and your express consent for us to share your confidential medical information. If we don’t have this information this will cause a delay in the completion of the work. You also need to allow enough time for the work to be completed.

Taxi Driver Medicals

Towcester Medical Centre is one of the three approved centres in the local area for Taxi Driver Medicals.

A licence is required before any person can drive a hackney carriage (taxi) or private hire vehicle (minicab).

Before a licence is granted the applicant must satisfy the Council that the applicant:

  • Is over 21 years of age
  • Has held a full driver’s licence for at least twelve months.  This must be a UK licence in order to take the DSA test.
  • Is medically fit
  • Completes a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check.  (Note: This is the new name for a Criminal Record check)
  • Passes a DSA driving test

For further information and to download the necessary forms click the link: Licensing for Taxis – South Northamptonshire

A taxi driver medical takes approximately half an hour during which the doctor will carry out the necessary examinations and complete the required medical form.

Taxi Driver Medicals are done on a private basis and are charged at £120 + VAT for registered patients or £180 + VAT for non-patients.

Payment needs to be made a week in advance of the appointment.

Please note we do not have card payment facilities at the surgery so we can only accept cash or by cheques.

Minor Surgery & Minor Injuries

Minor Surgery

Minor Surgery is performed at Towcester Medical Centre.

If you have a problem for which Minor Surgery may be required, you will initially need to see a doctor who can assess whether Minor Surgery is suitable. If the doctor feels that Minor Surgery is appropriate he or she will make a referral. You will be placed on a waiting list for Minor Surgery and appointment will be booked for you when it becomes available.

Certain procedures may require the completion of a consent form. This ensures that you understand the procedure and are made aware of any potential implications.

Minor Injury

Towcester Medical Centre is equipped to deal with some minor injuries such as cuts, minor burns and joint sprains. If you have a minor injury you should call and ask to for an appointment with one of the Practice Nurses and where we can we will fit you in as soon as possible.

If a nurse is available they will endeavour to see you as soon they can. However, there could be a wait as the nurse may well be fully booked, in which case you may be squeezed in between patients who have prebooked appointments or seen at the end of the surgery.

We are not a walk-in centre and we are not necessarily able to deal with all minor injuries due to the facilities we have or if there is nobody available at the time you are injured. If this is the case you will need to seek help at a walk-in centre or the nearest Accident and Emergency Department.

If you have an injury that is more severe or may involve a broken bone, poisoning or overdose then you should attend the nearest Accident and Emergency Department.

It means they can collect their medication from the surgery instead of having to travel for over a mile to get to a pharmacist.

Using this service means you do not have to ring or drop in a repeat prescription slip for your next months medication saving you and us time. We will ask you to tell us what medication you will need in 28 days time and to tick the repeat prescription slip. We will diary your request so that we can dispense your medication in time for you to collect 28 days later.

We will give you a slip with the date that you need to collect it on so you don’t forget.
